About Dr. Janssen

Eric W. Janssen, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who brings more than 25 years of expertise to SportsMED Orthopedic Surgery & Spine Center, serving patients at the Huntsville, Alabama, office. Dr. Janssen specializes in innovative sports medicine and the treatment of shoulder and knee injuries. Growing up as a high school and college athlete, Dr. Janssen brings his own experiences to his work. He is skilled at overall comprehensive sports medicine, joint replacement procedures, and knee and shoulder arthroscopy.

He also focuses on cutting-edge cartilage repair and transplantation options, always aiming for enduring results. Dr. Janssen received his Doctor of Medicine from The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He went on to finish his residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, and his sports medicine fellowship at The Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia.

Dr. Janssen also earned his Master of Business Administration at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Janssen is passionate about research, participating in a number of knee and shoulder studies, leading articular cartilage repair post-market research, and publishing several articles on ACL reconstruction procedures. He’s also a proud consultant for Microport Orthopedics Inc. Dr. Janssen holds several professional appointments and serves as a team physician for a handful of high schools, colleges, and universities.
