H. COBB ALEXANDER, M.D.
Dr. Alexander is a Board Certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and joint replacement surgery. A graduate of Washington and Lee University in Virginia, he received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University. In 1987, he completed his orthopaedic residency at the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1988, he completed a combined fellowship in joint replacement surgery and sports medicine, the former at New England Baptist Hospital and the latter at Children’s Hospital, both in Boston. Dr. Alexander was one of the founding physicians for the Joint Center at Huntsville Hospital East.
BRETT FRANKLIN, M.D.
Dr. Franklin graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He received his Medical Degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, AL in 2003. After completing his orthopaedic residency at the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, SC in 2008, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Dr. Franklin is a native of Huntsville and attended Grissom High School. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is on the active staff at Crestwood Hospital and the Surgery Center of Huntsville.
MATTHEW CLAYTON, M.D.
Dr. Clayton is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in total joint replacement, with emphasis on complex revisions of failed hip and knee replacements. Dr. Clayton also specializes in minimally invasive direct anterior hip replacement. Dr. Clayton graduated cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College with a degree in Biology/Psychology. He attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine followed by an orthopedic residency at Mount Carmel Health Systems in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Clayton completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction surgery at Southern Joint Replacement Institute in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Clayton is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He is clinical faculty for UAB School of Medicine at the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus. He is on the active staff at Crestwood Medical Center and the Surgery Center of Huntsville.
ERIC JANSSEN, M.D.
Dr. Eric Janssen is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine with an emphasis in the diagnosis and treatment of knee and shoulder injuries. He brings over 25 years of experience to his practice. Dr. Janssen’s interest in sports medicine comes from his own experience as a high school and college athlete. He graduated from Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia in 1986 and completed his residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. In 1992, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. He also received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama in 2018. Dr. Janssen has held numerous professional appointments, and serves as team physician for several area high schools as well as a number of local colleges and universities. In addition, Dr. Janssen is a consultant for Microport Orthopedics, Inc.
Dr. Janssen has published several articles on ACL reconstruction techniques and has participated in numerous research studies of the knee and shoulder. He is currently conducting post market research on articular cartilage repair.

TROY LAYTON, M.D.
Dr. Layton is a specialist in sports medicine and a 1989 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. After completing his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1994, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has served as team physician and consultant for such notable teams as University of Florida and Oklahoma State University as well as consultant for the Milwaukee Brewers and Major League Baseball. He is currently performing cartilage transplantation of the knee. Dr. Layton is a course instructor for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in advanced knee ligament reconstructive procedures as well as a Clinical Instructor at UAB.
MATTHEW T. OWEN, M.D.
Dr. Owen is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine with special interest and advanced training in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. He graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemical and biological engineering with honors from The University of Alabama in 2009. During his time at Alabama, he received significant recognition for his academic and leadership accomplishments. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2013. Afterwards, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center in 2018. During his training, Dr. Owen received further subspecialty sports training at UAB, Andrews Sports Medicine, and Children’s of Alabama. Dr. Owen then proceeded to pursue further training with a sports medicine and arthroscopic fellowship at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute in Taos, New Mexico. Dr. Owen has been a team physician for the US Ski and Snowboard team, University of Alabama at Birmingham, New Mexico Highlands University and local high school teams.
Dr. Owen has published multiple papers in peer reviewed orthopaedic journals and has been invited to speak at national meetings. He is a member of numerousprofessional orthopaedic associations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Owen is on staff and operates at Crestwood Medical Center, The Surgery Center of Huntsville and Madison Surgery Center. Dr. Owen is a board eligible orthopaedic surgeon.
JACK W. MOORE, M.D.
Dr. Moore graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harding University, where he received significant recognition for his academic accomplishments and sports activities. He attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham and obtained his M.D. degree in 1993. Afterwards, he completed his internship and residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Dr. Moore is a native of Huntsville/Madison County, and is a member of numerous medical and orthopaedic professional associations. He has a special interest in sports medicine and joint replacement. Dr. Moore is available for appointments at both the Athens and Madison offices.
