Dr. James Raley went to college and medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completing a combined undergraduate/graduate degree in the Rural Medical Scholars Program. This is where he met his wife Susanna, also a physician. After medical school they moved to Augusta, GA to pursue Orthopedic and Obstetrics training respectively. While in training he and his wife were blessed with two children, Walt and Magnolia and since moving to Huntsville have welcomed a third, Ward.
He then went on to complete his training with an emphasis on Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the Advanced Center for Joint Replacement with Northside Hospital where Dr. Raley pursued dedicated subspecialty training in primary hip and knee replacement, complex hip and knee replacement, and revision of the failed hip and knee replacement.
Dr Raley is a member of numerous professional hip and knee societies including AAHKS, The Anterior Hip Foundation, and the Personalized Arthroplasty Society whose emphasis is on restoring function through reproducing the patients pre arthritic anatomy through joint replacement.
Dr Raley has a special interest in same day discharge joint replacement with a focus on rapid recovery and opioid sparing approaches to hip and knee replacement. In order to accomplish this Dr. Raley uses the most up to date techniques relying on enabling and robotic technology in order to restore the patients pre arthritic anatomy. He utilizes the anterior approach as a primary approach for hip replacement and performs kinematically aligned total knee replacements. This approach to knee replacement reproduces the patient’s alignment and ligament tensioning that was present prior to developing arthritis. This method, which is customized to each patient avoids ligament releases which speeds recovery, and provides for enhanced pain relief, balance, mobility, joint functionality and motion of the knee.
In his spare time, Dr. Raley enjoys pickle ball, fly fishing, being at the lake, and participating in mission work. He is an active member of Whitesburg Baptist Church and the Huntsville fly fishing club.
