About Thomas Ricks, MD

Thomas Ricks, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained sports medicine/non-operative orthopedics physician.

Dr. Ricks is from Crystal Springs, a rural town in central Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State University, graduating with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and a degree in Chemistry. He then attended Medical School at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. After medical school, Dr. Ricks completed an internship at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, SC followed by the remainder of his Family Medicine Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.

During residency, Dr. Ricks pursued interests in Sports Medicine and Underserved Medicine, ultimately earning added residency certificates for completion of the Sports Medicine and Global and Underserved Medicine tracks. Dr. Ricks then attended a Non-Operative Sports Medicine Fellowship through the American Sports Medicine Institute at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Center in Birmingham, AL. During his residency and fellowship Dr. Ricks worked with several high school, college, and professional athletic programs including College of Charleston, Charleston Battery, Charleston Riverdogs, South Carolina Stingrays, McAdory High School, Jacksonville State University, Birmingham S University, Samford University, Birmingham Barons Baseball, New Orleans Breakers (USFL), and the Alabama Ballet.

Dr. Ricks specializes in the evaluation and non-operative management of a wide variety of orthopedic issues including sports/exercise injuries, chronic overuse injuries, and degenerative joint disease. He treats patients of all ages from little leaguers to high school/college athletes to weekend warriors to active seniors and all those in between. He specializes in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound-guided procedures including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), prolotherapy, corticosteroid injection, viscosupplementation injection, tenotomy, barbotage, and trigger-finger release. Other services offered by Dr. Ricks include non-operative fracture management, exertional compartment testing, sideline medical coverage, and concussion management.
